Today, .SU domain zone celebrates its 30th anniversary. It was on this day, September 19, 1990, that a record of the new top-level domain .SU (Soviet Union) appeared in the InterNIC database. This happened a year before the collapse of the USSR and 3.5 years before the registration of the national Russian zone .RU.
The .SU domain has a rather interesting and rich history. Domain registration was carried out on the initiative of the Association SUUG (Soviet UNIX User’s Group), which subsequently performed the functions of the domain administrator. With the end of the existence of the Soviet Union, legal aspects related to domain registration surfaced, which were resolved only in 1993. At the same time, the rights to administer .SU were transferred to the created at the Institute of Atomic Energy. I.V. Kurchatov Russian Research Institute for the Development of Public Networks (RosNIIROS).
In April 1994, the national Russian top-level domain .RU appeared, and the .SU domain zone was “frozen” for an indefinite period. Six years later, in 2000, the function of the registrar of the zone was assigned to the “Internet Development Fund”, which at the end of 2002 “unfrozen” the .SU domain and renewed the registration of domain names in it. On August 1, 2020, the domain again passed under the wing of RosNIIROS, which took over the functions of the administrator of the top-level domain zone .SU.
At the moment, there are almost 110 thousand domain names in the .SU zone, of which 78.5% are registered by individuals, 21.5% – by legal entities. More than 47.4% of domain names have existed for 4 years or more.
Detailed statistical information on the .SU domain zone can be found on the website statisticsdomains.рф.
