It seems that we are dealing with a trend: gaming laptops are no longer looking … screaming and defiant. Now a powerful laptop is a strict-looking mobile computer that is not ashamed to put on the table in front of colleagues discussing important issues at a business meeting. This is later, in the evening after work, the tables in Excel will be closed, and Battlefield will appear on the screen. And the MSI GS66 Stealth can easily do both.

On the global MSI website, there are many modifications of the GS66 Stealth. In all cases, we are talking about mobile PCs equipped with a 15.6-inch matrix with Full HD resolution. All the main characteristics of this series of laptops are shown in the table below.

One of the youngest and most inexpensive came to our test, if these words are generally applicable to such a laptop, of the Stealth modifications, under the number 10SE-266RU – this fact is definitely pleasing, since you are probably getting acquainted with the most running model in the series. The laptop has a 6-core Core i7-10750H and a 6-gigabyte mobile version of the GeForce RTX 2060, as well as 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB drive. All MSI GS66 Stealth come with a pre-installed version of Windows 10 – home or professional, to choose from. Unfortunately, at the time of writing, there was no test modification on sale, so I can not voice the real value of this laptop. It is known that the 10SFS-249RU model with a Core i9-10980HK, 32 GB DDR4-2666, a terabyte drive, a 300-Hz IPS-matrix and GeForce RTX 2070 in the Max-Q design cost an average of 250,000 rubles in May.

All GS66 Stealth are equipped with a Killer E3100 network controller with a maximum data transfer rate of 2.5 Gb / s. The wireless connection is provided by the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 processor, which supports IEEE 802.11b / g / n / ac / ax standards with a frequency of 2.4 and 5 GHz and a maximum bandwidth of up to 2.4 Gb / s. And this controller supports the standard Bluetooth 5.1.

Included with the test laptop was a fairly compact external power supply manufactured by Chicony with 180 watts. Kitchen scales showed that its weight is 502 grams.

⇡ # Appearance and input devices

The manufacturer himself calls the color of the GS66 Stealth case “true black”, and the design – “restrained”. And here, you know, you can’t argue with MSI. Perhaps the youth in the GS66 Stealth will not have enough pretentiousness, catchiness and riot of colors, but the older generation will definitely appreciate the appearance of the laptop. The logo on the cover does not light, there is no illumination at the edges of the case – modesty is before you, not otherwise.

The GS66 Stealth case is entirely made of metal and painted with matte black paint. Dust on the surface of the laptop is clearly visible, but fingerprints remain almost invisible.

The laptop is compact by the standards of 15-inch gaming models. Firstly, its thickness does not exceed 18 mm, and the mass is 2.1 kg – you can always take a computer with you if you wish. Secondly, the matrix has small frames on the sides, their thickness is 5 mm, due to which it was possible to reduce the depth and width of the body.

The lid of the laptop easily opens with one hand, the maximum opening angle is 180 degrees. Hinges are reliable and rigid. When pressed, the lid bends, but not much.

All connectors are located on the sides. On the left you will find the port for connecting an external power supply, Thunderbolt 3 (combined with USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C and mini-DisplayPort, as well as allowing you to charge your laptop), HDMI output and USB 3.2 Gen2 A-type. On the right there is a 3.5 mm mini-jack for connecting a headset, USB 3.2 Gen2 C-Type, RJ-45 and two more full-sized USB 3.2 Gen 2 A-type. As you can see, up to two monitors can be connected to a laptop at the same time (taking into account its own display – three, the manufacturer calls it Matrix Display 2 + 1), which turns the device into a powerful “campus” workstation.

Indeed, the GS66 Stealth is positioned not only as a gaming system, but also as a laptop for the so-called creative professionals. In this case, for complete happiness, the test model lacks a card reader. The rest of the functionality of the device is five plus.

The GS66 Stealth keyboard and touchpad is very similar to the input devices used in the MSI P65 Creator 9SF – and this is another indication that the device is suitable for those who create content. The touchpad is large, sleek and incredibly comfortable, because its width is 14 cm.

The GS66 Stealth keyboard does not fully copy the one installed in the P65 Creator 9SF, but repeats it in many ways. There is also no digital unit, but MSI and SteelSeries engineers did not have to “flatten” some buttons. Perhaps, only the ё and Fn keys were pretty good – they turned out to be very small. Some are also confused by the location of the function button on the right, and not on the left. I’ll have to get used to it, there’s nothing wrong with that. Another of the unusual: binding to the Fn function of Print Screen. But the arrow buttons are large and comfortable, the left Ctrl is the dream of any gamer, and Home, PgUp, PgDn and End are not lost, as, for example, in ROG Zephyrus G14. In addition, there are no stupid permutations like a slash to the left of the Enter button, as some other manufacturers like to do – in general, using the GS66 Stealth keyboard is quite comfortable.

Buttons for MSI / SteelSeries keyboards are traditionally small, but tactfully understandable. Pressing is almost silent. Each button has a separate RGB LED. The backlight is configured in SteelSeries Engine 3. Various visual effects are supported, including recognizing a musical melody or displaying what is happening in a running game.

Even in expensive gaming laptops, in 2020, they still mainly install low-quality HD cameras. GS66 Stealth in this regard was no exception, and its “webcam” is not suitable for normal streaming. But, according to the manufacturer, the camera sees in the infrared range, which gives it advantages when using the Windows Hello system (unlocking by face). And she can handle video calls to her Skype colleagues.

⇡ # Internal design and upgrade options

The ability to change removable components yourself is a big plus for the vast majority of MSI gaming laptops. The GS66 Stealth is relatively easy to disassemble. Relatively – because after dismantling the nine screws you have to sweat to pick up and carefully remove the bottom.

The cooling system Cooler Boost Trinity + in GS66 Stealth – conditionally separate. It consists of seven heat pipes and three fans. The cooler has a rather bizarre ornate design, I must admit. So, one heat pipe cooling the GP is also designed to remove heat from the CPU power converter. And one heat pipe cooling the central processor additionally cools the elements of the power supply circuit of the graphic chip and memory.

The manufacturer paid more attention to the GPU – as many as five heat pipes were allocated for cooling it and the VRM zone. The heat delivered with their help to a large radiator is dissipated by a pair of tangential type fans. The central processor (in our case, the Core i7-10750H) is cooled by four shorter heat pipes and a radiator with fewer fins – this is clearly visible in the photo. Well, only one Carlson removes heat from the CPU.

The manufacturer claims that the Cooler Boost Trinity + fans received the thinnest 0.1-mm blades, which, according to MSI, create a 15% greater airflow compared to the previous generation cooler. However, the performance of the GS66 Stealth cooling system will be studied in more detail below.

In the meantime, I note that the test model is easy to upgrade in the future. Now the laptop has 16 GB of DDR4-2666 memory in the form of a pair of Samsung modules. Over time, you can double the amount of RAM. You can also install another SSD in pair with the Samsung MZVLB1T0HALR SSD – the second M.2 slot on the motherboard is empty.

⇡ # Testing technique

Since the laptop has a fairly productive graphics, we tested in games using the maximum or close to those settings for the quality of the graphics. The full list of games and settings used for testing is given in the table below.

Game performance was determined using the well-known FRAPS program. With it, we get the rendering time of each frame. Then, using the FRAFS Bench Viewer utility, not only the average FPS, but also the 99th percentile is calculated. The use of the 99th percentile instead of the minimum number of frames per second is due to the desire to clear the results of random bursts of performance that were provoked by reasons not directly related to the operation of the main components of the platform.

The processor and memory performance was measured using the following software:

  • Corona 1.3. Testing the speed of rendering using the same renderer. Measures the speed of building a standard BTR scene used to measure performance.
  • WinRAR 5.40. Archiving a folder of 11 GB with different data in RAR5 format and with a maximum compression ratio.
  • Blender 2.80 RC1. Determining the speed of final rendering in one of the popular free packages for creating three-dimensional graphics. The time taken to build the final model from Blender Cycles Benchmark rev4 is measured.
  • x264 FHD Benchmark. Testing the speed of transcoding video to H.264 / AVC format.
  • x265 HD benchmark. Testing the speed of transcoding video to H.265 / HEVC format.
  • CINEBENCH R15 and R20. Measurement of the speed of photorealistic three-dimensional rendering in the animation package CINEMA 4D, CPU test.
  • Fritz 9 Chess Benchmarks. Testing the speed of a popular chess engine.
  • JetStream 1.1 and WebXPRT 3 (browser – Google Chrome). Performance testing when working with Internet applications built using HTML5 and JavaScript algorithms.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro 2019. Rendering a project in 4K resolution.
  • PCMark 10. A comprehensive benchmark that determines the speed level of all components of a laptop.

Testing the display is done using the X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter and the HCFR application.

The laptop’s battery life was checked in two modes. The first load option – web surfing – involves opening and closing the tabs of 3DNews.ru, Computeruniverse.ru and Unsplash.com sites one by one with an interval of 30 seconds. For this test, the Google Chrome browser is current at the time of testing the version. In the second mode, .mkv video and Full HD resolutions are played in the built-in Windows player with the snooze function activated. In all cases, the same display brightness was set at 200 cd / m2, and also turned off the keyboard backlight (if any) and sound. When playing a video, the laptop worked in the “airplane” mode.

⇡ # Display and sound

Some modifications of the GS66 Stealth are equipped with 300-Hz AUO B156HAN12.0 IPS-matrices equipped with anti-reflective coating and supporting Full HD resolution. However, another part of MSI Stealth laptops is equipped with Sharp LQ156M1JW03 IPS panels, which use transistors based on indium oxide, gallium and zinc – IGZO. A test copy of the laptop just has such a screen. It also supports Full HD resolution, has a color gamut of 100% sRGB, but its vertical frequency is already 240 Hz.

In short, the GS66 Stealth has an excellent display! Judge for yourself:

  • Gamma 2.16 only very slightly falls short of the reference value of 2.2.
  • The color temperature basically slightly exceeds the reference indicator of 6500 K, but the stability of shades of gray is at an excellent level.
  • The color gamut is really close to 100% of the sRGB standard. Grayscale mean DeltaE deviation is 1.21 with a maximum value of 2.22. The average error in the ColorChecker24 test was 1.68 with a maximum error of 2.34.

Therefore, the test model can be advised not only to gamers, but also to artists, architects, designers and so on.

Maybe someone does not have enough brightness Sharp LQ156M1JW03 – the maximum level of white luminosity was 272 cd / m2and the minimum is 14 cd / m2. In part, this figure is corrected due to the presence of anti-reflective coating. In fact, the lack of brightness will be noticeable only when working on a laptop in the open in sunny weather.

At the same time, the display has good (for laptops) contrast – 1018: 1. Watching movies on the GS66 Stealth is very comfortable at any time of the day. The claimed viewing angles – 178 degrees in both planes – correspond to reality, no distortions noticeable to the eye are observed. The crystalline effect at the screen makes itself felt only on a black field, but this is still better than what ordinary IPS matrices demonstrate. I did not find any visible flashes at the edges of the screen. Finally, the matrix used can be classified as Flicker-Free-solutions in the entire working range of brightness.

The speakers in the GS66 Stealth are not just loud, but very, very, very loud. Long ago I came across such laptops. At the same time, sound quality can be described as above average. The low frequencies are not enough for the speakers, alas.

⇡ # CPU and RAM performance

The six-core Core i7-10750H replaces the Core i7-9750H. The difference between these chips lies in only two aspects – the clock frequency and the memory controller. A more modern chip of the Comet Lake-H family received support for DDR4-2933 standard RAM, although we see that the GS66 Stealth uses modules operating at an effective frequency of 2666 MHz. So here everything is left to the manufacturer. Something similar happens with clock speeds. So, the base frequency of the Core i7-10750H and Core i7-9750H is the same – 2.6 GHz. However, the Boost frequency of the “comet” is higher: 5.0 GHz versus 4.5 GHz. When loading all the cores, the novelty can work at a frequency of 4.2 GHz, and the 6-core of the previous generation – at 4 GHz. On paper, the 200 MHz difference doesn’t look formidable – so even without tests you can safely say that these 6-cores are not much different from each other in terms of performance. Однако, как вы прекрасно знаете, во многих ресурсоемких задачах подобные показатели оказываются недостижимыми — уж слишком малый уровень TDP установлен для этих чипов. Да, на пару минут (максимально — до 128 с) это ограничение можно снять, но далее, если СО ноутбука и его подсистема питания будут справляться с такой нагрузкой, все равно последует неминуемый сброс тактовой частоты — переход с состояния PL2 в PL1. Так что результатам, указанным в таблице ниже, удивляться не приходится — в сложных задачах, таких как Adobe Premier Pro, никаких 4-4,2 ГГц при загрузке всех ядер вы не увидите.

Не стоит удивляться и несовпадению реальной потребляемой мощности и величины TDP. Тестовый ноутбук имеет несколько режимов работы, я протестировал его с настройками «Баланс» и «Экстремальная производительность». BIOS ноутбука откалиброван так, чтобы чип работал с максимальной эффективностью, а потому во всех режимах пиковые показатели нагрева ЦП достигают 90+ градусов Цельсия. Параметр PL1, как видно, «плавает» от режима к режиму в пределах 50-65 Вт — разница небольшая, но в обоих случаях это значение зависит от многих факторов. Основным из них, конечно же, является нагрев Core i7-10750H.

Лэптоп работает шумно, но, как я сказал, он выжимает максимум из 6-ядерника при наличии таких энергетических потребностей и такой системы охлаждения. Например, средняя частота Core i7-9750H в модели ASUS ROG Zephyrus M GU502GU в программе Adobe Premiere Pro 2019 составила 3,2 ГГц, а в GS66 Stealth — 3,4 ГГц.

Ниже представлены результаты тестирования различных ноутбуков. Мы видим подтверждения словам, сказанным ранее: лэптоп с Core i7-10750H далеко не всегда опережает систему с Core i7-9750H, потому что на практике разница между этими чипами оказывается небольшой, плюс вмешиваются различные сторонние факторы. Не забывайте, что за производительность ноутбука в процессорозависимых программах отвечает не только CPU, но и оперативная память, а также основной накопитель.

⇡#Эффективность работы графики

Мобильная графика уровня GeForce RTX 2060 в 2020 году хорошо подходит для современных игр в разрешении Full HD. Поэтому GS66 Stealth смело можно назвать производительной игровой системой. Если же подобного уровня быстродействия вам будет недостаточно, то придется раскошелится на покупку модели с ГП GeForce RTX 2070 или даже круче.

В «Ведьмаке-3» в режиме «Баланс» после двух часов, проведенных в игре, средняя температура самого горячего ядра ЦП достигает 92 градусов Цельсия, а GPU максимально нагрелся до 75 градусов Цельсия. Мы видим, что кулер ноутбука действительно заточен под более эффективный отвод тепла от графики. При этом частота графического чипа в играх менялась в диапазоне от 1530 до 1770 МГц, но средний показатель составил 1542 МГц. Частота всех ядер Core i7-10750H держится отметки 4,1 ГГц.

Под нагрузкой «Стелс» работает довольно шумно, но среди протестированных современных моделей есть и более шумные экземпляры. В играх измерительный прибор, закрепленный на уровне головы пользователя (~30 см от ноутбука), зафиксировал шум в 43,8 дБА.

Что интересно, переключение из режима «Баланс» на режим «Экстремальная производительность» не возымело никакого действия — это означает, что ГП и ЦП и GS66 Stealth работают на пределе возможностей, ограниченных эффективностью СО.

В целом же лэптоп демонстрирует прогнозируемый для ПК с графикой GeForce RTX 2060 уровень производительности — это хорошо показывают бенчмарки. В Unigine Superposition тестовая модель набрала 3557 баллов в режиме 1080p Extreme.

Практически во всех приложениях, кроме «Метро», наблюдается вполне комфортный FPS. Если же вам требуется более высокий фреймрейт, то будет достаточно с максимального качества графики перейти на очень высокое или просто высокое. Или самостоятельно покопаться в настройках той или иной игры.

⇡#Быстродействие дисковой подсистемы

Используемый в MSI GS66 STEALTH твердотельный накопитель Samsung MZVLB1T0HALR относится к серии PM981. Уверен, вы хорошо знакомы с этим накопителем — корейский производитель продает его в розницу под названием 970 EVO. SSD в GS66 Stealth используется отличный — тут и добавить нечего.

⇡#Автономная работа

В ноутбук установлен литий-ионный аккумулятор из 4 ячеек с суммарным зарядом 99,9 Вт⋅ч. Установить батарею большей емкости не представляется возможным в связи с тем, что устройства с большей батареей не позволяют брать с собой в салон самолета. При такой емкости аккумулятора GS66 Stealth, впрочем, не бьет рекордов автономности. Тем не менее полученные результаты при яркости экрана 200 кд/м2 можно смело считать хорошими для игровой модели, оснащенной далеко не самыми энергоэффективными комплектующими.

⇡#Выводы

В первую очередь GS66 Stealth — это весьма качественный игровой ноутбук. Придраться к сборке, функциональности и используемым компонентам довольно тяжело. Корпус — металлический, и его строгий дизайн только делает лэптоп красивее и практичнее. Портов — навалом, при этом есть современные Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.2 Gen2 и возможность подключить до двух внешних мониторов одновременно. Клавиатура и тачпад — удобные, привыкать к необычному расположению некоторых кнопок долго не придется. Экран — отличнейший: он вполне подойдет не только геймерам, но и тем, кто создает контент. Время работы от аккумулятора — хорошее, хотя от батареи на 99,9 Вт⋅ч мы могли бы ожидать и большего.
