According to the publication Reutersciting Indian Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in an interview with The Indian Express, Tesla will “begin operations” in India in early 2021. This implies the start of official sales of Tesla electric vehicles in India and their service.
The minister also noted that in case of successful sales, the company does not exclude the possibility of building a plant in India to assemble its Tesla electric vehicles. Earlier this year, the American carmaker opened its first overseas plant in Shanghai, China. In addition, Tesla is currently building two more new factories. One will be located in the vicinity of Berlin, the other – in the American city of Austin.
According to ReutersIndia is pursuing an active policy to reduce its dependence on combustible fuels, and is also trying to reduce the amount of pollution. At the same time, the country’s efforts to promote electric vehicles faced the problems of lack of investment in the development of the infrastructure necessary for this type of transport.
According to Economic TimesTesla will begin selling its most affordable model in India – Model 3. At the same time, its cost in the local market is predicted at about $ 75 thousand, which is twice as expensive as the price in the United States or China. The exact time of the launch of sales of Tesla electric vehicles in India is still unknown. However, the head of the company Elon Musk indicated on Twitter that sales will definitely not begin in January. Sales of electric vehicles will most likely be carried out directly by Tesla itself – as is done in most other countries in the world.
