At the end of last year, a review of the MSI GE66 Raider model was already published on our website – then version 10SGS-062RU, equipped with an 8-core Core i9-10980HK and a GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER in the Max-Q design, came to our editorial office. “Raider”, which will be discussed today, has changed little in appearance, but under the “hood” of this version of GE66 there is NVIDIA Ampere mobile graphics. Let’s take a look at how much faster the updated gaming mobile PC is in gaming.

MSI’s official website reports that we will find three MSI GE66 Raider models on sale. In all cases, 8-core Intel Comet Lake processors and mobile GeForce RTX 3070 or RTX 3080 graphics cards are used. The rest of the characteristics of the novelty are shown in the table below.

A younger version of the new GE66 Raider (marking – 10UG-418RU) arrived at our test lab. It has an 8-core Core i7-10870H, 16 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM, a mobile GeForce RTX 3070 and a 512 GB SSD. At the time of this writing, such a model could be bought for 195 thousand rubles.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not indicate the maximum power consumption of the GPU in its laptops, however, we see that we are talking about the most productive version of the GeForce RTX 3070. MSI claims that the updated version of the GE66 Raider is the world’s first laptop with a Wi-Fi 6E wireless module. The computer uses an Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX210 controller that supports IEEE 802.11b / g / n / ac / ax at 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz with a maximum bandwidth of up to 2.4 Gb / s and Bluetooth 5.2.

A 2.5 Gigabit Killer Ethernet controller E3100X is responsible for the wired network in the laptop.

A fairly large external power supply with a power of 230 W was included with the laptop. Its weight is 700 grams – it will not be very convenient to carry it with you every time. Support for USB Power Delivery has not been reported.

⇡ # Appearance and input devices

Externally, the updated model has not undergone any changes. You look at the GE66 Raider – and there are strong associations with sports cars, with their audacious and aggressive design.

The main body is still made of metal. I have no complaints about the build quality: the test for bending and pushing through all kinds of surfaces – the keyboard and display lid – was passed. The lid, by the way, can be easily opened with one hand, and its maximum opening angle is 140 degrees.

The laptop looks compact. The side bezels of the display are only 5 mm wide (the screen occupies 82% of the area of ​​the top lid), and the screen itself is located a little closer to the user than usual. This is achieved through the use of special hinges – they position the screen well.

The thickness and weight of the “Raider” are not record-breaking, as a result, together with the external power supply unit, you will have to carry a little more than 3 kg of game “iron” with you in your backpack.

In my review of the 2020 model year, I already noted the GE66 Raider series motto: “Light it up!” And this word, in my opinion, means not only the advanced gaming equipment of the laptop, but also the bright MYSTIC LIGHT backlight. In a laptop, not only the keyboard is lit, but the entire front edge of the case. Naturally, the backlight can always be turned off if desired.

The laptop interfaces are separated on three sides – this arrangement turns out to be very convenient if the laptop is used more often at home and only occasionally moved from place to place. At the back, the GE66 Raider is equipped with mini-DisplayPort and HDMI video outputs, as well as an RJ-45 network port and USB 3.2 Gen2 C-type connector combined with a mini-DisplayPort. There is also a port for connecting a power supply.

On the left of the Raider you will find USB 3.2 Gen2 A- and C-types and a 3.5-mm combo port for connecting a headset, on the right – a couple of USB 3.2 Gen1 A-types and a card reader that supports SD cards of XC / HC formats …

The keyboard in the GE66 Raider hasn’t changed – it’s still created in collaboration with SteelSeries. There is (traditionally) no digital block, but playing and typing while sitting at a laptop turns out to be quite convenient. You will only have to get used to the small Fn and right Ctrl, as well as the location of Home, PgUp, PgDn and End in the far right column. As for the rest, the keys were fine with me, especially the large Shift, left Ctrl, Enter and Backspace. Pressing any button is smooth, but with a tangible impact. Typing on the keyboard is pretty quiet.

I also have no particular complaints about the touch panel. But playing in any case will be more handy with a mouse.

Finally, MSI should be commended for using the Full HD webcam – many other manufacturers still install modules that deliver 720p maximum. The picture quality of such a “webcam” turns out to be quite enough for video calls even in a shaded room.

⇡ # Internal structure and upgrade possibilities

I’d like to make modern laptops as easy as possible to upgrade. After all, buying an expensive device, you want to be able to extend its “shelf life” in the future by replacing, for example, SSD with a faster model or by increasing the amount of RAM. Fortunately, the test GE66 Raider is quite easy to understand: we unscrew all the screws – and carefully (so as not to leave ugly burrs on the case) we pry the bottom detachable plate with a plastic card.

The “Raider” cooling system consists of six heat pipes of different lengths and shapes, two large copper radiators and a pair of tangential fans. Due to this design, heated air leaves the laptop case not only from the back, but also from the sides.

Externally, the GE66 Raider cooler inspires confidence, but we will definitely test its efficiency further.

There is definitely a sense to look under the laptop lid some time after purchase. Firstly, one more SSD can be installed in a pair to the main drive – not everyone will be satisfied with the initial volume of 512 GB. Secondly, 16 GB of RAM will not always suffice for games, but its volume can be increased.

It turns out that you won’t have any problems with the GE66 Raider upgrade.

The gaming laptop testing methodology places an even greater emphasis on gaming. Measurement of the performance of laptops was carried out using various software.

Game performance was measured using the well-known CapFrameX program. It allows you to get the render time of each frame. The use of the 99th percentile instead of the minimum number of frames per second is due to the desire to cleanse the results of random performance fluctuations that were triggered by reasons not directly related to the operation of the main components of the platform.

Testing the laptop in games and applications was carried out with the activation of the fastest mode suitable for these tasks.


  • Corona 1.3. Testing the rendering speed using the renderer of the same name. This measures the build speed of a standard BTR scene used to measure performance.
  • Blender 2.91.2. Determining the speed of the final rendering in one of the popular free software packages for creating 3D graphics. The time taken to build the final pavillon_barcelona_v1.2 model from Blender Benchmark is measured.
  • x265 HD Benchmark. Testing the speed of video transcoding to H.265 / HEVC format. The tables and graphs show the average integer value obtained after five test runs.
  • CINEBENCH R23. Measuring the speed of photorealistic 3D rendering in the animation package CINEMA 4D, CPU test. The tables and graphs show the average integer value obtained after five test runs.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro 2020. Rendering the project in 4K resolution.
  • Topaz Video Enhance AI v1.2.3. Performance testing in an AI-based program to improve video detail. The test uses the original video at a resolution of 1280 × 720, which is enlarged by 150% using the Artemis-HQ model: P, HQ, MC.

  • 3DMark Professional Edition 2.11.6846. Testing in Time Spy and Fire Strike scenes.
  • Unigine Superposition Benchmark. Tested in 1080p Extreme mode.

Testing the laptop in resource-intensive applications was carried out in the default mode without any adjustments to the parameters of the CPU and cooler.

Display testing is performed using the X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter and the DisplayCAL 3 application.

The battery life of the laptop was tested in two modes. The first load option – web surfing – involves the alternate opening and closing of tabs on the sites, and with an interval of 30 seconds. For this test, we use the Google Chrome browser that was current at the time of testing. In the second mode, video of the .mkv format and Full HD resolution is played in the built-in Windows player with the repeat function activated. In all cases, the same display brightness was set at 200 cd / m22and also turned off the keyboard backlight (if any) and sound.

A 4K version of the GE66 Raider is available for sale. The peculiarity of this IPS-matrix is ​​support for the color space AdobeRGB. The rest of the models use a Full HD display with a refresh rate of 240 (this is exactly what we have on our test) or 300 Hz.

In our case, we are talking about the Sharp LQ156M1JW03 – a matrix that has long proven itself from the best side. In my opinion, the GE66 Raider display is great not only for gaming and entertainment in general, but also for serious (professional) creative endeavors.

As for the sound, here too I have nothing to find fault with. By laptop standards, the acoustic potential of the GE66 Raider is very good: the bass is clearly audible, and the middle and top do not sink, as is often the case in inexpensive “plastic” laptops.

As always, you can play with the laptop’s operating modes in the MSI Dragon Center application. In the tables below, you can see how the laptop performs when using the Extreme Performance and Balanced presets and with the Cooler Boost function enabled, which forces the cooler fans to run at maximum speed.

Immediately, it is striking that the laptop is configured for the quietest possible operation – even in Extreme Performance mode, the laptop functions really quietly. Yes, the average heating of the processor and graphics goes above 80 degrees Celsius, but in fact, playing with the GE66 Raider turns out to be very comfortable – using a headset is completely unnecessary, and the keyboard does not heat up much. At the same time, we see that enabling the Cooler Boost function allows you to seriously reduce the temperature of the chips, while increasing their performance. However, in this mode, the laptop cannot be called quiet.

Let me draw your attention to the fact that GE66 Raider supports Dynamic Boost 2.0 technology. This means that from now on, the power consumption of the CPU and GPU can constantly change, adjusting to the conditions that provide the maximum FPS in a particular game.

We see that in games that seriously load the GeForce RTX 3070, the maximum power consumption of the graphics chip really reaches the declared 130 W, and then the GPU power changes depending on the conditions (the capabilities of the cooler, for example) and the BIOS settings of the laptop.

As always, MSI engineers make the most of the hardware installed in the laptop. That is why the central processor gets very hot when performing resource-intensive tasks, because its power consumption exceeds the passport TDP level (for Core i7-10870H – 45 W). We can see that the PL1 value varies between 70-74 W, but the Extreme Performance mode is set in such a way that the cooler dissipates an average of 56 W. In Balanced mode, this figure turns out to be noticeably lower – in such conditions the laptop can be considered cold and almost silent.

⇡#Производительность ноутбука

Выход ноутбучной графики GeForce RTX 30 создал довольно интересный прецедент. Как мы уже рассказывали, отныне версий того или иного ГП может быть несколько. Вот в GE66 Raider используется GeForce RTX 3070, максимальная мощность которой составляет 130 Вт. Но в продаже вы встретите лэптопы с такой же графикой, рассчитанной максимум на 100, 90 или даже 80 Вт. Думаю, очевидно, что такие лэптопы, в которых формально используется одна и та же графика («GeForce RTX 3070 для ноутбука»), будут обладать разной производительностью. И иногда эта разница будет колоссальной.

Наглядный пример приведен ниже.

Например, в ASUS Zephyrus G15 тоже используется мобильная версия GeForce RTX 3070. Разница с GE66 Raider заключается только в том, что в этом лэптопе GPU имеет ограничение по питанию видеокарты в 100 Вт. И мы видим, что GE66 Raider оказывается быстрее на 3-8 % в режиме Extreme Performance и на 7-11 % — при включении функции Cooler Boost.

Полагаю, GE66 Raider опередит даже некоторые игровые лэптопы с GeForce RTX 3080, если в этих моделях флагманский процессор NVIDIA будет «задушен» до уровня 80-90 Вт.

Естественно, такое положение дел вносит путаницу — выбирать ноутбук с графикой Ampere сложно. Что ж, тем полезнее становятся наши обзоры.

Тестирование ноутбука в играх проводилось в режиме Extreme Performance, но мы выяснили, что включение функции Cooler Boost увеличит FPS в среднем на 3 %. В то же время производительности GE66 Raider оказывается достаточно, чтобы комфортно играть во все 17 игр, используемых нами в методике тестирования, — и в большинстве случаев речь идет о максимальном качестве графики.

Заметно полноценная GeForce RTX 3070 ускоряет лэптоп и при выполнении ресурсоемких задач.

Ниже приведены результаты тестирования ноутбука в комплексном бенчмарке PCMARK10.

В ряде тестов (архивирование, работа с графикой и фото- и видеоконтентом, взаимодействие с браузерами, а также офисными приложениями) важную роль играет накопитель ноутбука. В лэптопе MSI установлен SSD Western Digital WDC PC SN730 — не самый быстрый накопитель по меркам NVMe-моделей. Например, скорости линейных чтения и записи не превышают 3 Гбайт/с. Случайные операции тоже выполняются небыстро. Все это сказывается на результатах тестирования PCMARK 10, который, как известно, любит быстрые SSD.

⇡#Автономная работа ноутбука

В ноутбуке установлен литий-ионный аккумулятор на 99,9 Вт⋅ч — это максимальная емкость батареи, позволяющая взять устройство с собой на борт самолета. Как видите, несмотря на это, MSI GE66 Raider не бьет рекордов автономности при яркости дисплея в 200 кд/м2… Тем не менее перед нами очень мощный ноутбук, который в легких сценариях работы (веб-серфинг, просмотр видео) работает почти семь часов — это вполне себе достижение.

В прошлом году я хвалил MSI GE66 Raider — было за что. Не меньшего количества теплых слов достойна и обновленная версия «Рейдера», ведь ключевым улучшение лэптопа, по сути, стало применение новой графики NVIDIA Ampere. В итоге перед вами довольно быстрая игровая система с неурезанной GeForce RTX 3070 для ноутбуков. Производительности такого ускорителя оказывается вполне достаточно для того, чтобы играть в разрешении Full HD во все современные игры — преимущественно на максимальном качестве графики.

Кроме того, GE66 Raider оснащен классным дисплеем, качественной клавиатурой и отличным набором портов и видеовыходов. Автономность устройства — пусть и не рекордная — позволит пользоваться им вдали от дома весь рабочий день. Наконец, «Рейдер» обладает хорошими возможностями апгрейда запоминающих устройств.

Да, при этом MSI GE 66 Raider даже в младшей модификации никак не назовешь дешевым, но модели с графикой класса GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER и раньше стоили под 200 000 рублей.
