The Chinese manufacturer of LCD panels overtook LG Display for the first time at the beginning of the year

The coronavirus pandemic helped the Chinese company BOE Technology for the first time overtake the South Korean LG Display in the supply of LCD panels in the first quarter of the year. The bulk of the LG Display LCD panels are mass produced in China, so quarantine-related restrictive measures for transporting products have reduced the volume of LG Display. BOE was also partially affected for the same reasons, but it was saved by orientation to the domestic market of China.

In general, as Sigmaintell analysts report, in the first quarter of 2020, manufacturers shipped 31.4 million LCD panels of various diagonals. This is 7.7% less than in the same period last year. In terms of the supplied glass area, the decrease was 3.8%, which resulted in the supply of LCD with a total area of 5 million m2. This means that on average the diagonal of the supplied LCD panels has become larger, namely – 24 inches or 0.7 inches more than a year ago (0.2 inches more than in the previous quarter).

The Chinese company BOE Technology, as noted above, ranked first in the ranking of LCD suppliers with the volume of shipped panels at 8.7 million damage, which amounted to an annual growth of 13%. LG Display delivered 6.9 million panels, or 11% less than a year ago.

In third place is the Taiwanese company AU Optronics. Like the LG Display, in the panel assembly process, it relies on Chinese factories, which were forced to stand idle during the pandemic. Thus, over the year, the quarterly supply of AU Optronics LCD panels decreased by 23%.

The rest of the market for liquid crystal panels was distributed as follows in decreasing order: Samsung, Innolux Corporation, CEC-Panda and TCL CSOT.

Returning to the BOE company: it should be noted that it is actively switching to the production of better IPS panels and panels using other new technologies. So, in the first quarter, IPS LCD accounted for 75% of LCD shipments.

As for the forecast for the second quarter, analysts expect strong demand for the panel. According to them, the consumer market and the Internet cafe market are recovering, as is the demand for panels with an increasing diagonal.
