It became known that the journalist of RTL News from the Netherlands Daniel Verlaan was able to connect to a secret online conference of the defense ministers of the member states of the European Union.
He managed to do this thanks to the fact that the Minister of Defense of the Netherlands Anka Beyleveld posted on her Twitter page a photo with a link to the conference, as well as five of the six digits of the pin code required to join the meeting.
“I got access to a secret online meeting of defense ministers from 27 European countries. Minister Beyleveld shared a photo with a link to the meeting and a part of the pin code, which can be guessed in several tries“, – wrote in his account Verlaan and backed up the statement with a photograph showing some of the participants in the meeting.
It should be noted that joining the meeting at such a high level did not require any additional checks. After successfully joining the video conference, the journalist immediately announced his presence and intention to leave the online meeting immediately.
“This behavior is illegal and will be reported to the authorities“, – said a representative of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, adding that during this meeting the ministers did not discuss any confidential issues. “No other issues, which are state secrets, were not discussed at this meeting. Reports of what was discussed at this meeting are sent to the 27 member states, as well as a variety of diplomats and officials“, – he added.
