Smartwatches will be the first consumer electronics product to kick off the massive transition to the new MicroLED display technology, said Lee Biing-Jye, chairman of Epistar. However, according to him, adaptation of the technology for mass production will take at least 3-4 years.

The Epistar chief also added that 300,000 MicroLEDs mass transfer is required to produce a single 300 × 300-pixel smartwatch display. According to him, such complexity of MicroLED-displays will allow adapting the technology of their mass production for TVs no earlier than in 4-5 years.
As points out DigiTimesEpistar uses the MicroLED epitaxial crystal growth method (oriented growth of one crystal on the surface of another, which acts as a substrate) in partnership with Taiwan’s AU Optronics (AUO). The latter also supplies glass substrates for it.
According to Li Bin-Jai, his company managed to solve many of the technological difficulties associated with the serial production of MicroLED diodes, including the issue of mass transfer of crystals to substrates that will form the basis of the future display. Epistar expects to reach sufficient volume within 2-3 years and provide manufacturer-ready MicroLED-based products in 3-4 years.
The company is currently focused on increasing the volume of epitaxial crystal growth, as well as reducing production costs. MicroLEDs are 20-50 microns too small to be produced on conventional substrates where the minimum diode size can be at least 50-100 microns. To resolve the issue, the manufacturer resorted to the use of glass substrates. But their application has its own difficulties. Li Bin-Jayu also added that his company is now using glass substrates to produce screens based on Mini-LED technology.
