The maximum frequency of the GPU AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT will reach 3 GHz

The flagship Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card will have the highest maximum GPU clock speed of any Big Navi accelerator (RDNA 2). At least according to informant Patrick Schur, posted on Twitter

According to the screenshots taken in the MorePowerTool utility, the future Big Navi flagship – the Radeon RX 6900 XT – will be able to reach a higher clock speed limit than the RX 6800 XT and RX 6800 graphics cards – 3 GHz.

The AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT, offering 72 Navi 21 Compute Units (CUs), has a maximum GPU frequency of 2.8 GHz. This limitation seems to be hard-coded by AMD itself, and is respected regardless of the modification of the video card by all partners – reviewers and extreme overclockers have not yet been able to overcome this limit.

The limitation may be due to AMD’s desire to prevent the cheaper model from competing with the much more expensive Radeon RX 6900 XT. If both accelerators had the same frequency limits, there is a high probability that after overclocking the cut-down version could easily approach the RX 6900XT in performance. In the end, both models have the same base frequencies and a 300W TBP (Total Board Power) power limit.

The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, which will offer 80 compute units with an increased maximum clock speed of 3 GHz, could be an excellent choice for overclockers, especially if AMD allows partners to produce non-reference accelerators.

Overclocker Roman Hartung aka der8auer recently posted a video trying to break the 2.8 GHz limit on PowerColor’s RX 6800 XT Red Devil. Unfortunately, despite many attempts, this cannot be done without special tools:

The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT with 5120 stream processors will compete with the $ 1,499 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card. Both cards are sure to set new world overclocking records. Unfortunately, GPU makers will not be able to meet the huge demand for high-performance graphics cards, so only a select few will be able to purchase the 6900XT at a suggested price of $ 999 this year.

AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT will officially hit the market on December 8th.
