The competition commission, according to TASS, intends to send a proposal to the general director of the state corporation Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin to extend the selection of participants in the new cosmonaut corps.
The start of the current recruitment was announced on June 3, 2019. As of the beginning of June 2020, out of 1,404 applicants, 156 applicants provided a full package of necessary documents: 123 men and 33 women were among them. The face-to-face selection stage started in July, and the winners of the competition were planned to be announced in October.
And now it became known that the selection procedure is planned to be extended. “The competition committee decided to come up with a proposal to the head of Roscosmos to extend the selection until mid-December“, – said the press service of the Cosmonaut Training Center (CTC) named after Yu.A. Gagarin.
Apparently, this proposal is due to the ongoing pandemic. Earlier, due to the restrictions caused by the coronavirus, the commission decided that those who submitted an incomplete package of documents to the tender before June 1, 2020 inclusive, will be able to become its participant if they subsequently provide the missing documents.
Note that at one of the press conferences, the head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin complained that the Russian cosmonaut corps is sorely lacking in the fair half of humanity. Obviously, based on the results of the current selection, one or more women will be included in the new cosmonaut corps.
