⇡ # What’s new in the world?
By far, the most long-awaited event of the past week was the announcement of the Sony PlayStation 5. The presentation, which was held online and broadcast on YouTube live, was watched by 7.5 million people. The head of the PlayStation, Jim Ryan (Jim Ryan) called the appearance of the PS5 the most striking among all Sony consoles. But among users of social networks, its appearance caused an ambiguous reaction.
Users call the console too large, compare it with a California mansion, a coffee machine, a skyscraper and even a shawarma. This, of course, is witty, ridiculous – everything is as we love, but the claims to the size of the console look somehow strained. First, Sony has not yet published full specifications, including size and weight. And secondly, is this really important for a home device? after all, no one scolds an 80-inch TV for too large a diagonal.
Curiously, the PlayStation 5 will be released in two versions: with and without a Blu-ray drive. Perhaps in this way Sony takes care of those who live in places with slow internet in order to maximize their audience, but such a gesture in itself looks strange in 2020. However, in the case of all consoles, the most important has always been and will be games. Most of the projects will be released on all platforms, this is logical, but there will be exclusives. Gran Turismo 7, Marvel Spider-Man Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, a remake of Demon’s Souls and Horizon Zero Dawn 2 will be available for PlayStation 5 at the time of launch, but the cost of the console, unfortunately, is not yet announced – presumably, this will happen in the fall, at the same time or almost simultaneously with the disclosure of the price of the new Xbox from Microsoft.
Enough last week and sad news. For example, the Computex 2020 exhibition, which we dearly love and attend every year, was officially canceled due to the coronavirus. This event was always held in early June, but initially this year the organizers wanted to postpone it to September – they say that by then the pandemic will end and the virus itself will not be afraid of anyone. But everything turned out to be not so simple, and as a result, the next Computex will be held in 2021, on usual dates from June 1 to 4.
Xiaomi spent a very productive week. First, she introduced the Mi Band 5 bracelet, which will cost only $ 32 and will begin to be sold in a week – June 18. This new product will be equipped with a 1.2-inch AMOLED display, connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0, and also receive an NFC module for contactless payments. The set of sensors includes an accelerometer, a barometer, heart rate and proximity sensors. More than ten sports modes have been implemented, plus a function for tracking the menstrual cycle is provided for this. In addition, the device is able to collect detailed information about the quality and duration of sleep without using separate paid applications. Well, for those who do not need an NFC module, a model without it will be released at a price of $ 27.
In addition to the bracelet, Xiaomi introduced another Redmi 9 smartphone with a large screen and an integrated camera with four modules. It will be priced from € 149. The screen size of Redmi 9 is 6.53 inches, resolution is 2340 × 1080 pixels, on top there is a compact drop-shaped cutout for the front camera. The hardware platform is MediaTek Helio G80 with an eight-core central processor. On the back of the case there is a camera that includes a 13-megapixel main module, an ultra-wide-angle module with a viewing angle of 118 degrees and a sensor resolution of 8 megapixels, as well as a 5-megapixel macro module with the ability to shoot at a distance of 4 cm, as well as a 2-megapixel depth sensor . Russian prices have not yet been announced, but it seems that the device will be very good for its money.
And one more “bomb” from the Chinese manufacturer – Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro 15 2020 laptops on the Intel Comet Lake platform. These laptops are equipped with high-quality 15.6-inch displays with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels, with 100% coverage of the sRGB space and Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass. Two basic modifications are available for selection: with a Core i5-10210U processor and a Core i7-10510U. In the first case, the amount of RAM DDR4-2666 will be 8 GB, in the second – 16 GB, and the capacity of the PCIe NVMe SSD – 512 GB and 1 TB, respectively. But the main thing, as always, is the price. The youngest version of Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro 15 2020 is priced at $ 850, the oldest – at $ 1000. And this is rightly not bad, especially if the screen really is as good as the manufacturer promises.
Good news for Roscosmos and the entire space industry of our country – NASA will pay $ 90 million for the delivery of the astronaut to the ISS. Despite the successful launch of the SpaceX Crew Dragon manned spacecraft as part of the Demo-2 (DM-2) mission, which we discussed a lot in the pilot digest, NASA intends to continue to cooperate with Roscosmos in sending astronauts to the ISS. In addition, Russian astronauts will go into space from the cosmodrome in Florida next year.
Last week, NASA announced that it would send astronaut Kate Rubins (Kate Rubins, pictured above) to the ISS to participate in a six-month mission as a flight engineer and crew member of Expedition 63/64. It will be sent to the ISS along with cosmonauts Sergei Ryzhikov and Sergei Kud-Sverchkov on the Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft, which will be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on October 14, 2020. It is for this launch that NASA will pay $ 90 million, exactly as much as it cost a seat in the “Union” for the US astronaut before the successful SpaceX Crew Dragon flight.
Another potentially good news for the space industry in our country – the private company CosmoCurs introduced the project of an ultra-light launch vehicle with which it plans to participate in the Aeronet National Technology Initiative (STI) contest. Previously, NTI promised to finance the development of several projects to create ultra-light launch vehicles. So, this year it is planned to spend about $ 150 thousand to develop at least three projects of ultra-light launch vehicles.
The project involves the construction of a two-stage 19-meter rocket with nine engines, which can bring about 265 kg of cargo into a sun-synchronous orbit with an altitude of about 500 km. By the way, this is not the only CosmoCurs development – the company is going to provide tourist suborbital flight services and is working on a single-stage returnable rocket and seven-seater ship, a flight on which can cost about 200-250 thousand dollars, that is, almost for free by the standards of space tourism.
However, it is one thing to publish beautiful projects with fascinating descriptions, and it is another thing to bring them to life and conduct tests. It was the second part that was not asked by the Russian company Hoversurf, which produces the promising Scorpion hoverbike.
This hoverbike crashed during a demonstration flight in Dubai. At an altitude of about 30 meters, the car lost stability, after which the pilot went down, but the automation did not “catch” the horizon and hit the car with two rear screws on concrete. At first glance, the published video doesn’t look scary at all, but it’s exactly until you start thinking about screws with an open design.
In the event of an accident, propellers can damage not only the pilot, but also surrounding objects and spectators. However, this time everything ended well – during the test flight there were no people on the site, and the pilot himself was not injured.
Another piece of news from NASA sounds a little sad – the launch of the long-suffering space telescope, James Webb, has been postponed indefinitely. The last time the launch was planned for March 2021, and the coronavirus epidemic became the official reason for its cancellation. However, this is not the only problem to be solved. Initially, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) project was supposed to be launched into orbit in October 2018, and today NASA is cautiously hoping to launch “before the end of 2021”. Repeated delays led to a rise in price of the project, which is estimated at $ 8.8 billion.
⇡ # What’s new in 3DNews reviews?
Last weekend, Alexander Babulin pleased with a review of the unusual game project “If Found …”, which is an interactive comic about transgenderism, self-acceptance and acceptance by others. I didn’t think that I myself would be happy to read about the game on such a controversial topic, but it turned out that the project deserved attention. According to the author, he has an original and effective visual style, as well as sound, although in the whole game a little lack of interactivity.
On the same day we released another GamesBlender, in which Project CARS 3 from Namco Bandai deserves special attention. Well, the game topic closes with a review of the boring quest Those Who Remain by Denis Schennikov and an acquaintance with the incredibly cool second part of The Last of Us Part II, which Alexey Likhachev rated 10 out of 10.
Lovers of self-assembly should definitely get acquainted with the latest issue of “Computer of the Month” from Sergey Plotnikov, as well as with a discussion of this material in the comments – they are extremely adequate and constructive. And everyone who gained a few extra pounds during self-isolation doesn’t care to read my column “How I stopped lying on the couch and fell in love with sports thanks to the Apple Watch”.
Well, in addition to this, we had a review of the Logitech G102 LIGHTSYNC mouse, a review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S smartphone and an incredibly interesting Dmitry Vorontsov column called “For America” [and all mankind]”.
That’s all, read proven news from reliable sources, don’t be sick, take care of yourself and your loved ones! See you in a week.
