There is more and more information about new NVIDIA video cards. The 3DNews test laboratory has already introduced you to several GeForce RTX 3080 models, and now the long-awaited version of ROG STRIX GAMING from ASUS has arrived at our editorial office. As we said, this review will focus on perhaps the coolest modification of one of the older representatives of Ampere video cards.



⇡ # Specifications and design features

First of all, I would like to note the serious factory overclocking of the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC GPU. In Boost mode, the GPU frequency reaches 1905 MHz, but we all know that the actual frequency of Ampere processors, as a rule, turns out to be even higher. The rest of the technical characteristics of the video card are shown in the table below.

In the first part, you will get acquainted with the architectural features of Ampere accelerators, of which there are many. The second article discusses in detail the capabilities of one of the versions of the GeForce RTX 3080, and not only in games.

It’s no secret that the demand for NVIDIA new products has significantly exceeded the supply. GeForce RTX 3080 graphics accelerators are in serious shortage. In Moscow right now, of course, you can buy this video card, but you will only have to pay from 75 to 120 thousand rubles (depending on the model). I can’t dare to call such amounts adequate. As for the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC, I did not find it on sale at all at the time of this writing.

The video card comes in a beautiful cardboard box. True, I did not find anything particularly remarkable inside, apart from the device itself.

If you have read reviews of the reference version of the GeForce RTX 3080, as well as the Palit and MSI models, then you are already aware that miniature and compact modifications of this accelerator are unlikely to appear on sale. As you can see, all manufacturers provide their video cards with large coolers – and ASUS is no exception. So, the length of the ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC is 32 cm, besides the device will “eat” two below the soldered expansion slots of the motherboard.

For greater clarity, I propose to see how the hero of the review looks in a system assembled in a Corsair 4000D Midi-Tower case. With the ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC, the build looks very colorful.

The graphics card design has changed quite a lot. However, from my assessment of the appearance of the device, it will not become faster in games. But you, dear readers, share in the comments your opinion on the updated design of the ROG STRIX – how do you like it? ROG STRIX Radeon RX 6000 models will look the same by the way.

The ROG logo, located on the backplate of the device and illuminated with all the colors of the rainbow, disappeared in the ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC. Now only the side of the video card is illuminated. Because of this know-how (to hide the wire needed for the RGB tape to work), we had to screw the GEFORCE RTX plate separately. Three fans blow the PCB and heatsink of the cooling system. It is clearly seen that Axial-tech impellers are used, which differ in the special shape of the blades and the presence of a closed ring at the edges. They were used in previous ASUS video cards. According to the manufacturer, this form of “Carlsons” allows you to increase the air flow and reduce noise at high speeds. It also noticeably increases the rigidity of the plastic blades.

Only in older versions of video cards are Axial-tech fans with a diameter of 88 mm used, and three 95-mm impellers are installed here. The extreme “carlsons” received 11 blades each and rotate counterclockwise. A medium fan with 13 blades spins clockwise.

The photo above clearly shows that the cooler of the video card is longer than the printed circuit board. To prevent the air blown by the third fan “clogged”, several holes are provided in the back plate design. The backplate itself is made of metal.

On the side there is an analog switch for video card operating modes. I will talk about it in more detail in the second part of the article. At the back there are two four-pin connectors for connecting fans at once. They can be connected to housing impellers, fixed on the front panel. First, it increases the number of useful connectors. Secondly, the rotational speed of case coolers can be tied to the temperature readings of the video card.

The I / O panel has room for three DisplayPorts and two HDMI ports at once. The grill through which the heated air is blown out is small.

Cooler ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC consists of a huge one-piece radiator. The manufacturer claims that the contact area of ​​the aluminum fins has increased by 31% – in fact, this is why the video card occupies 2.9 expansion slots, and not 2.7 as before. The heatsink removes heat not only from the processor, but also from memory chips, as well as elements of the power subsystem. The radiator is pierced by 7 copper nickel-plated heat pipes of different lengths and shapes. The heatsink contacts the GPU and GDDR6X memory chips using a massive nickel-plated sole.

The metal backplate is also part of the cooling system. With the help of thermal pads, it removes some of the heat from the memory chips (from the side of the contact pins) and the elements of the VRM zone.

ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC PCB is a work of art. As always, the PCB is assembled without human intervention – ASUS calls this process Auto-Extreme Technology.

The power subsystem of the device has 22 phases: 9 on the left and 13 on the right. Each channel consists of a power stage and a choke. Some of the phases are assembled with ON Semiconductor NCP303151 assemblies, and some with Texas Instruments CSD95481RWJ. 18 phases are dedicated to GPU operation and are controlled by a pair of 10-channel Monolithic Power Systems MP2888A PWM controllers. Four more channels are responsible for the operation of the GDDR6X memory (10 Micron OPT77 D8BGW chips are used) – they are controlled by the UPI uP9512Q controller.

Three eight-pin connectors must be connected to the video card. The connectors, by the way, are equipped with light indication. If the red light turns on, it means that there are voltage drops along the 12 V line at the power supply.

Against the backdrop of recent events, users began to study in detail the set of capacitors responsible for filtering the current on the voltage buses NVVDD and MSVDD. The fact is that some versions of the GeForce RTX 3080 work unstable if the GPU frequency exceeds 2000 MHz. Instability manifests itself in crashes to the desktop without any error messages. ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC uses only ceramic capacitor chips. This means that the video card will work stably in any modes: with and without overclocking.

⇡ # Testing methodology and stand

Compare GeForce RTX 3080 with many other graphics adapters in this article – in all popular resolutions. In this review, I will compare the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC with the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and Palit GeForce RTX 3080 GamingPro OC. The complete test bench configuration is shown in the table below.

The graphics cards were loaded using The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (maximum graphics quality settings, 4K resolution) for two hours. Tester’s performance was measured by 3DMark Time Spy, 3DMark Fire Strike and Unigine Superposition benchmarks. The room temperature at the time of testing was 22 degrees Celsius. The noise level was measured using a Mastech MS6708 device installed opposite the video card at a distance of 15 cm.

The video cards were tested in 16 games in three popular resolutions: Full HD, WQHD and Ultra HD. A complete list of applications and graphics settings is provided below:

Gaming performance was measured using the well-known MSI Afterburner software. It allows you to get the render time of each frame. The use of the 99th percentile instead of the indicators of the minimum number of frames per second is due to the desire to clean the results of random spikes in performance, which were provoked by reasons not directly related to the operation of the main components of the platform.

⇡ # Clock frequencies, power consumption, temperature, noise level and overclocking

The cooler of the video card works in a semi-passive mode, that is, the fans spin up only at the moment when the temperature of the graphics core reaches 50 degrees Celsius. The impellers start rotating smoothly – without a sharp and unpleasant increase in the noise level.

As I already said, the video card supports two modes of operation – you can switch between them using the toggle switch located on the side of the PCB. The default is P Mode (Performance). The test results are presented in the table. Interestingly, enabling Q Mode (Quiet) has practically no effect on system performance. The cooler fans start to spin slower, and the temperature of the GPU and other system components increases slightly. However, even in this mode, ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC can be called a cold video card.

Indeed, the cooler of the review hero copes with its task superbly, and in fact we are dealing with a rather hot GPU and a very “gluttonous” video card. So, in the default mode, the maximum GPU temperature did not exceed 64 degrees Celsius. Memory chips and power converter elements are also not very hot. Well, the value of 39.3 dBA, measured from a distance of 15 cm, is perceived by ear very, very comfortably – the video card works quietly, and in Q Mode it is almost silent.

At the same time, the cooler has a huge margin of safety – this is clearly noticeable, because at the maximum rotational speed, the maximum GPU heating dropped to 52 degrees Celsius. And this is the merit of the large radiator, which successfully removes more than 350 watts of energy. Well, I can safely state an obvious fact: ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC is equipped with excellent CO – quiet and cold!

Measurement with our instruments showed that in games, a stand with Core i9-10900K and GeForce RTX 3080 consumes a maximum of 460 W of electricity. And when I launched Prime95 and The Witcher-3 simultaneously, the maximum power consumption of the stand jumped to 589 W.

All previous versions of the GeForce RTX 3080 that we tested had frankly mediocre overclocking capabilities. In ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC, we can increase the power limit by 21% at once. However, this did not give a serious result either – the stability of the video card was ensured only by increasing the core frequency by only 58 MHz. Taking into account the overclocking of the stand memory with the ROG STRIX, the GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC became 4-5% faster in benchmarks. Analyzing these results, it is easy to conclude that the test sample in the default mode works almost at its maximum, overclocking at home is of little use.

⇡ # Performance in games

Almost two months have passed since the release of the GeForce RTX 3080, so the test results of the ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC will not be a revelation to you. We see that the ASUS model stably bypasses the overclocked version of Palit, but very often the processor dependence is wedged into the test results – it actually manifests itself in all three resolutions, but most of all in Full HD and WQHD. Consider this point if you want to use the GeForce RTX 3080 at low resolutions for the highest FPS possible.

I believe that the tables and graphs fixed below give complete information regarding the performance level of the ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 3080 GAMING OC – and clearly do not need additional comments.
