Autumn 2020 will be remembered by the whole world not only for the tense situation with the spread of the new coronavirus infection, but also, perhaps, as the most generous period for Hi-Tech novelties over the past five years for sure. Judge for yourself – in just a couple of months, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30XX and AMD Radeon RX 6800 (XT) video cards, AMD Ryzen 9 59XX processors, Xbox Series X and Sony PlayStation 5 game consoles, as well as the twelfth version of the Apple iPhone were released. And these are only the most significant events, not taking into account a series of new games and announced technologies.

Of course, against this background, it is easy for announcements of other products to get lost, but among them there is something to see. In particular, ASUS works as an automatic machine for the monthly announcement of new laptop models, the reason for which was the August announcement of Intel Tiger Lake-U processors with integrated Intel Xe graphics core. Most recently, we got acquainted with the premium model of the ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA ultrabook, and today we will study and test the more affordable model ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL – a compact and lightweight, but at the same time quite productive ultrabook with a discrete NVIDIA graphics card.

ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL comes in a small cardboard box with a carrying handle. The box is designed concisely – no bright inserts and stickers, only the name of the ultrabook series and the processor manufacturer.

At the end of the box you can find a sticker with serial numbers and an indication of the ultrabook model. There is no configuration on it.

We have a pre-release sample of an ultrabook, so it only comes with a power adapter with an American plug and an adapter.

The serial versions, of course, will have a complete set and will certainly acquire interesting bonuses, as is most often the case with ASUS in this class of ultrabooks.

ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL is manufactured in China and comes with a 2-year warranty. As for the cost, for the minimum configuration they will ask 84,990 rubles, and the price for the top versions is not yet known.

The ultrabook ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL is available in a single color, which ASUS calls “Pine Gray”, and looks quite modern and stylish. The plastic panels of the ultrabook case have a light glossy shade, but their surface is non-marking – there are practically no prints left on it.

When looking at the panels from an angle, it seems that they are covered with the smallest particles, which shimmer in the light. In combination with the chrome ASUS logo, it looks very beautiful.

Below, on the base of the ultrabook case, you can find the model name, country of manufacture and electrical specifications of the power adapter.

To prevent the case from slipping, there are four rubber feet on the bottom panel, reminiscent of trapeziums of the lowest possible height.

The ultrabook is compact and light: its dimensions are 319.0 x 202.5 x 17.5 mm (front thickness is 16.0 mm), and it weighs less than one kilogram (to be precise, 967 grams). He is in baboutIt looks more like a thick magazine than a compact computer — it’s easy and convenient to carry with you.

The display panel can be opened with one hand – you do not need to hold the base while doing this – and locks in any position.

The opening angle of the display is 135 degrees.

When open, the display raises the base of the ultrabook 3 degrees.

This long-standing feature of ASUS Ultrabooks is the exclusive ErgoLift screen hinge, which improves hand comfort when typing, cooling efficiency of internal components and sound quality.

You might think that the end of the lid with such constant openings can get scratched, but ASUS has prudently equipped it with two plastic stops.

All ports and connectors are located on the side ends of the ultrabook.

ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL features a microSD card reader, combo headphone / microphone jack, one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A port (5Gbps), HDMI video output, two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 4 support (up to 40 Gbps) with Power Delivery and indicators.

Note that the set of ports here is more successful than that of the ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA – there is both a card reader and a mini-jack.

The keyboard of the ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL is a membrane type, with a 1.4 mm key travel.

Since we have a pre-release version of the ultrabook on our tests, there is no Russian layout on it. English is printed in white characters on a gray-green background, and they are readable.

The dimensions of the main keys are 15.5 × 14.5 mm, and the functional keys are 13.0 × 7.0 mm. But there is also a problem constantly shifting from one ZenBook to another with the reduced arrow keys: here they measure 15.5 by 7.0 mm – it is very inconvenient for an adult to use them. Located next to the Delete button, the ultrabook power key does not work when accidentally pressed.

The keyboard is equipped with a three-level backlighting, which would be nice for ASUS specialists to work on. In our sample, the space bar was especially distinguished.

When typing, the keyboard does not emit any noise, so working at the ultrabook late at night will definitely not interfere with your household.

Instead of the usual touchpad, the ultrabook is equipped with a NumberPad 2.0 device with dimensions of 105 × 62 mm, which, by pressing one button in the upper right corner, turns into a number pad.

It works without any complaints. We add that there are versions of the ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435 with a ScreenPad 2.0 display instead of a touchpad, which makes this ultrabook even more functional and flexible to use.

An HD camera, IR camera and an array of optimized microphones (supports echo cancellation and intelligent noise canceling) are built into the upper display edge of the ultrabook.

Note that the build quality of the ultrabook is at the highest level. Due to the fact that the panels are thin, they bend, but there are no squeaks or clicks at these moments. Everything is assembled very neatly and reliably, the ultrabook is pleasant to use both from a visual and tactile point of view.

Our version of the ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL features a 14-inch, FHD (1920 x 1080), 60Hz narrow-bezel NanoEdge IPS display. The declared color gamut at 100% sRGB and viewing angles of 178 °.

The surface of the matrix is ​​matte, its marking is AUOA48F (manufactured by AU Optronics).

We tested the ultrabook display with the X-Rite i1 Display Pro calibrator and Argyll CMS software with DispcalGUI GUI. All measurements were taken prior to display calibration. Let’s see the results.

With a color temperature close to the reference value of 6500 K, we can assume that the ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL screen is already fairly well calibrated at the factory.

The gamma curve also comes close to the reference.

The same can be said for color balance in grayscale.

As a result, we can summarize that the display of the ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL ultrabook is almost perfectly configured and does not require calibration.

In principle, this was confirmed by the results of that very calibration.

According to the measurement results, the maximum value of the display brightness was 394 cd / m22, and the minimum is 20 cd / m22… We will show the entire range of brightness measurement further on the graph with a step of 10%.

Subjectively, the brightness level of 45-47% is comfortable for working with an ultrabook indoors. If ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL is used outdoors in daylight, the brightness will have to be increased to 60%. Unfortunately, it was not possible to check the display in direct sunlight in gloomy autumn weather.

Display backlight uniformity measured at 200 cd / m2 brightness2, raises questions only in one zone from the left edge, but again, this is impossible to notice without special devices.

In general, we can summarize that the display of the ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL is of very good quality and with accurate factory calibration.

⇡ #Internal structure and accessories

Unfortunately, this time it was not possible to get to a visual inspection of the internal layout of the ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL ultrabook – the latches on the case turned out to be too tight, and it was inappropriate to apply a higher force to the test sample for obvious reasons. Therefore, you will have to study the components using diagnostic software. Let’s start with AIDA64 Extreme.

The hardware of ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL is based on an Intel chipset motherboard with BIOS version dated October 9, 2020.

Already during the tests, we updated the BIOS to the latest available version – 204, dated November 10, 2020.

ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL can be equipped with one of two 11th Gen Tiger Lake-U processors: Intel Core i5-1135G7 or Intel Core i7-1165G7. In our version of the ultrabook, just the latest version of the processor is installed.

Recall that such a CPU, depending on the type of load, can operate at frequencies from 1.2 to 4.7 GHz. It has 12 MB of L3 cache, its maximum TDP level is declared at around 28 W, and the base TDP is more than half that of 12 W.

The ultrabook can be equipped with 8 or 16 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, soldered on the motherboard. There is no 32GB version, and there is no way to increase the volume. But its effective frequency is very high 4266 MHz, albeit with the timings 36-39-39-90_1T.

Unlike our recently tested ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA, the ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL not only offers the onboard Intel Iris Xe graphics core, but also an optional NVIDIA GeForce MX450 discrete graphics card.

GeForce MX450 is a new video card that differs from its predecessor MX350 in that it is manufactured using a 12nm process technology, it has 896 shader processors (+ 40%) and GDDR6 memory with a frequency of 10 GHz (+ 43%) at its disposal, as well as a slightly higher core frequency. The rest of the characteristics of these video cards are almost the same, but even the above allowed the GeForce MX450 to outpace its predecessor by 33%, and the Intel Iris Xe graphics core integrated into the processor – 2.5 times at once. Nevertheless, counting on stable 60 FPS in actual games, as you understand, is not a matter ofaboutit.

In ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL you can find only one SSD-drive – 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB. However, there are versions where one of the two larger drives is combined with 32 GB of Intel Optane H10 memory. Our version of the ultrabook has an Intel P660 (SSDPEKNW010T8) SSD with a volume of 1 TB with an expired resource of 200 TBW.

The performance of such a drive is average by modern standards, but it is minimally dependent on the operating mode of the ultrabook, whether it is connected to a power adapter and mains (results on the left) or runs exclusively on the built-in battery (results on the right).

At the same time, in everyday work, the drive does not heat up above 35 degrees Celsius, and even in the stress test, the SSD showed a maximum 45 degrees Celsius (lower monitoring graph), which cannot be said about the central processor, the temperature mode of which we will check later.

The network connections in ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL are provided by the Intel AX201D2W wireless module with support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), MIMO 2 × 2 and the ability to operate at 2.5 and 5.0 GHz (160 MHz bandwidth). Two antennas of the wireless module are located on the sides of the ultrabook case.

The sound system here is typical of the ZenBook series. Harman Kardon specialists participated in its development, which is marked right on the ultrabook case.

There are two speakers here, they are built into the trapezoidal cuts of the front of the chassis base.

The volume of the speakers is enough for a room with an area of ​​18-20 square meters, while nothing rattles or vibrates. High and medium frequencies are reproduced cleanly and loudly, and low frequencies, for obvious reasons, are extremely few here, but one cannot say that they are completely absent.

⇡ #Cooling system, efficiency and noise level

The ultrabook cooling system uses one fan, radiator and one heat pipe. Cold air is sucked in by the fan from below through the ventilation grill at the base, and heated air is thrown out through the rear end, straight to the display.

ASUS assured us that such heating of the display will not do any harm. The cooling system is adjusted in such a way that even at the maximum fan speed, working behind the Ultrabook cannot be called uncomfortable – the noise is heard, but does not interfere. In modes without load on the central processor and video card, the ultrabook runs silently. As with other ASUS Ultrabooks, fan modes are controlled in the Fan Profile section of the My ASUS app.

To assess the efficiency of cooling the central processor in the ultrabook, we used the powerMAX utility (in AVX mode), and the monitoring parameters were read and displayed by HWiNFO64. Testing conducted in an indoor environment of approximately 24.5 degrees Celsius and running Windows 10 Pro x64 operating system with the latest available drivers and updates.

We tested the temperature setting of ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL when the ultrabook is powered from the mains and from the battery, having received the following results.

Comparing both results, we can immediately say that there are no cardinal differences in the operation of the ultrabook in different modes that are observed in more productive models. In the first case – when connected to a power adapter – the ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL processor, after stabilizing temperatures, operates at a frequency of 2.3 GHz with a TDP level of about 20 watts and a temperature above 90 degrees Celsius. In the second, when running on battery power, the average processor frequency in a load is even 0.1 GHz higher with a slightly higher TDP – 23 W – and, ultimately, lower temperatures. But the latter is the merit of the activated cooling fan, which was silent during the entire stress test from the mains. In general, we can summarize that for this ultrabook model there is practically no difference in which mode it works (mains / battery).

With a similar test of the video card with the Fire Strike stability test from the 3DMark package, we got completely identical results.

In both modes of operation of the ultrabook, the graphics processor of the discrete video card worked at a frequency of slightly above 1.1 GHz, the effective video memory frequency was 10 GHz, and the GPU temperature rose only to 67-68 degrees Celsius.

According to the stress tests of the central processor and discrete video card of the ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL ultrabook, we can conclude that its performance should not depend on the connection to the power adapter or battery operation. We will further confirm this with test results.

Разница всё же имеет место, ультрабук работает немного быстрее при подключении к электросети, но многое зависит от конкретного теста. Где-то эта разница может достигать 15 %, а где-то её вообще нет. Сильнее всего разница может ощущаться в играх.

На наш взгляд, в плане производительности ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL будет интересно сравнить с ASUS ZenBook Flip S UX371EA, у которого практически такая же аппаратная конфигурация, не считая отсутствия дискретной NVIDIA GeForce MX450. Процессоры и память в этих ультрабуках идентичны друг другу. Результаты мы приведём в таблице.

Что интересно, ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL оказался чуть быстрее своего собрата в бенчмарках процессора и памяти, но в некоторых из них (WinRAR или CompuBench) немного впереди премиальный ZenBook Flip S UX371EA. В играх по понятной причине лидирует герой сегодняшнего материала. GeForce MX450, конечно же, сложно назвать игровой видеокартой, но в сравнении со встроенной в процессор графикой это существенная прибавка производительности.

В комплекте с ультрабуком поставляется компактный и лёгкий (225 г) адаптер питания AD2129320 мощностью 65 Вт (20,0 В, 3,25 А). Адаптер имеет встроенный кабель длиной 1,95 метра.

Ёмкость литий-полимерного аккумулятора в ультрабуке составляет 63 Вт·ч.

Время полного заряда аккумулятора оказалось сравнительно продолжительным. Мы наблюдали не менее чем за четырьмя циклами практически полного заряда — с 3 до 99%, и среднее время заряда составило 2 часа 35 минут

Автономность нового ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL мы протестировали в пакете PCMark’10, используя режимы тестирования Modern Office, Applications, Gaming и Video при яркости дисплея, вручную зафиксированной на уровне 200 кд/м2… Результаты приведём на скриншотах.

Ну что же, это уже не фантастика, а без оговорок впечатляющие показатели. Аккумулятора ультрабука хватит не менее чем на 15-16 часов непрерывной работы в офисных приложениях или при воспроизведении полноэкранного Full HD-видео, а играть на нём можно не менее чем два часа, и при этом не будет никакого падения производительности, которое обычно наблюдается в игровых моделях ноутбуков.

⇡#Conclusion

Если для работы вам требуется лёгкий, компактный и при этом производительный ультрабук с качественным дисплеем и пятнадцатью часами работы от аккумулятора, то ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL можно считать первым и пока чуть ли не единственным таким ультрабуком, сочетающим в себе все эти качества одновременно. Кроме того, данная модель оснащена дискретной видеокартой, позволяющей провести пару часов за какими-нибудь не слишком ресурсоёмкими игрушками со средними настройками качества графики. При этом важно, что у ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL при работе от аккумулятора не происходит многократного падения производительности – как в вычислительных, так и в игровых задачах он сохраняет достаточный для комфортной работы уровень.

Отдельно отметим отлично откалиброванный на заводе IPS-дисплей, интерфейс Thunderbolt 4, удобный NumberPad 2.0 и беспроводной модуль связи с поддержкой Wi-Fi 6. Из недостатков – маленькие стрелки на клавиатуре, и, пожалуй, всё. Что будет со стоимостью топовых конфигураций — со временем узнаем, но уже сейчас ясно, что в таком формате и с такими характеристиками демократичной цены на ASUS ZenBook 14 Ultralight UX435EGL не будет.
