TV broadcasters in Russia are ready to give frequencies for 5G, but with a number of conditions

The development of fifth generation (5G) mobile communications in Russia is constrained by the difficulties in providing operators with the necessary frequency resource. However, according to RBC, the matter may soon get off the ground.

We are talking about providing mobile operators with certain frequencies that are now used for television broadcasting. This is the 694-790 MHz band that will help telcos to efficiently penetrate 5G into buildings.

It is reported that TV broadcasters are ready to transfer part of the 694-790 MHz range for the development of 5G, but subject to certain conditions. They are spelled out in the Concept for the Development of Television and Radio Broadcasting for 2020-2025, which is now being developed by a special group of experts.

It is said that frequencies can be transferred to operators if they fully reimburse the costs of converting television transmitters to other frequency bands. However, the amount of compensation has not yet been disclosed.

Another necessary condition is to provide TV broadcasters with a resource for launching the third multiplex (a package of digital channels) and a multiplex with high-definition channels.

As for the timing of the possible transfer of frequencies to cellular operators, they are not specified.
