Video chat added to Fortnite, but not on Xbox consoles

Epic Games announced that Fortnite players can now video chat via the Houseparty app.

This appears to be part of Epic’s ongoing plan to equip Fortnite with features that will allow players to stay in the game longer. The company is trying to transform the game into a metaverse – a set of interconnected virtual worlds, as in the novels Avalanche and Ready Player One.

For safety reasons, Houseparty’s Fortnite video chat has been stripped down to provide you with a virtual battle royale background so other users can only see you.

Houseparty video chat is currently available to Fortnite players on PC, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Users will also need an iOS or Android mobile device with the appropriate app. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, the feature is not yet available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Perhaps this is due to the special relationship between Epic Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment, which has recently formed.

Fortnite is available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Android.
