All Logitech MX Series manipulators are uniquely designed with human anatomy in mind. At the same time, the MX Master models collect all the innovations designed to work efficiently. The Logitech MX Master 3 mouse, which is the successor of this series of devices, belongs to such original tools. According to the manufacturer, this manipulator is designed specifically for programmers and creative professionals. We have to find out how convenient it is to use the Logitech MX Master 3 mouse in various applications, as well as just in everyday life.

The mouse is built on an optical sensor with a resolution of 4000 dpi, working with Darkfield’s proprietary laser tracking system. The latter provides high positioning accuracy on a wide variety of surfaces, including glass. As for the resolution, the maximum value is quite enough to work, for example, with any graphic editors. You can change the resolution in the range from 200 to 4000 dpi, in 50 dots increments.
The Logitech MX Master 3 model can be simultaneously connected to three different devices at once, which can run under different operating systems. Logitech Flow technology instantly switches between devices when you move the cursor to the edge of the screen. Thus, you do not need a second or even a third manipulator when working with multiple computers. And if you also have a Logitech MX Keys wireless keyboard at your disposal, then it will work on three computers at once, tracking the movement of the mouse cursor.
But the most interesting thing is that Logitech Flow technology makes it easy and simple to copy files and folders, text or other data between these devices. So, for example, to copy a folder, just drag it off the edge of the screen with the mouse. However, the built-in drive for these purposes is not provided for by the Logitech MX Master 3, if suddenly someone thought that this was the secret. Data copying occurs over a local network to which all computers must be connected. Search and configuration are performed in automatic mode, and devices are connected via SSL using the AES algorithm with a 256-bit encryption key.
Additional mouse functions are provided using the Logitech Options software application. Among them are gesture control and programming of the available keys, which we will definitely talk about in more detail when we start working with the device. In the meantime, we add that, according to the manufacturer, Logitech MX Master 3 works without recharging up to seventy days, which is quite a lot. But the most interesting thing is that the mouse is charging so quickly that you will not have time youeven go to pour tea after connecting it to the USB port of your computer, as you will have an extra hour of working time. To do this, the mouse needs only one minute to be recharged! If you do not have even this minute, then Logitech MX Master 3 will work with a USB cable connected to it. To connect the latter, a USB-C port is provided on board the device.
⇡ #Contents of delivery
Despite the rather large dimensions of the device itself, the box of the novelty is quite small. Moreover, this is not a traditional blister, but a sturdy cardboard package that reliably protects the contents from any external influences. A minimum set of accessories is supplied with the mouse in the box, which is sufficient for full-fledged work:
- USB transceiver;
- USB-A to USB-C cable for charging the built-in battery;
- printed Getting Started Guide.
Compared to the previous generation model – Logitech MX Master 2S – the design of the new item has become more modern and even aggressive. The Logitech MX Master 3 immediately catches the eye with its dynamic shapes and lines, an inclined top plane and a pronounced asymmetry of the case. In terms of body shape, this model is a kind of intermediate option between the completely unique Logitech MX Vertical manipulator and traditional mice.
The novelty is available in two colors: graphite and gray. We got the first option for testing. The top of the body is almost completely covered with a soft, rough coating with a relief structure in the lower part, which resists sliding of fingers and palm. The only exceptions are the main buttons, which are made of smoother plastic. All surfaces of the mouse, of course, attract both fingerprints and dust, but for effective work, a clear grip of the manipulator by the hand and comfortable work with it are much more important than a beautiful appearance. So this moment is hardly worth attributing to the disadvantages of the device.
The main mouse buttons have a large area for comfortable pressing, but at the same time they do not merge with the body together. Between them is the main MagSpeed wheel for vertical scrolling of documents (it also responds to pressing), as well as a small rectangular button for switching between modes of operation of the wheel. The latter is one of the key features of the new manipulator. It has an electromagnetic mechanism of operation. By pressing the button located next to it once, you get discrete wheel rotation with a clear tactile feedback, as if there were a mechanical ratchet inside. Only small tremors give out a different principle of operation in the wheel. By pressing the button a second time, you will switch the wheel to smooth operation. And in one, and in another case, by sharply spinning and releasing the wheel, you can immediately move far enough up or down the document (the manufacturer claims a speed of up to 1000 lines per second) – it will continue to rotate by inertia.
The wheel itself is made of machined steel. The surface is made of corrugated, but without pronounced shapes, as can be seen in the pictures from the official description on the manufacturer’s website. It is because of the relatively large mass that the steel wheel has enough inertia for fast scrolling.
There is a fairly large area with a recess for the thumb on the mouse body. Under the platform, behind a small, barely noticeable ledge, one of the additional buttons is hidden, which by default is responsible for activating the gesture mode. To work with the latter, you need to hold down this button with your thumb and move the mouse to one side or the other. Slightly higher are additional buttons for moving to the next or previous state, as well as a charge indicator and a cylindrical drum for horizontal scrolling. Like the main wheel, it is made of metal, but at the same time it has a more embossed surface and does not have the ability to press. It makes sense that the developers have moved the drum above a pair of side additional buttons on the new model. With this arrangement, the user can press these buttons with the top of the thumb without changing its main position on the body. But for horizontal scrolling, you already have to raise your finger a little.
The lower part of the case is made of a smoother, silver-colored plastic. In the front there is a USB-C port for connecting a cable. In the center, as usual, there is a sensor, and next to it is a power control button and a button for switching between active devices to which the mouse is connected. For sliding, there are four fairly large fluoroplastic legs of different shapes and areas. The manufacturer has provided for the possibility of replacing the built-in lithium-polymer battery. To do this, you will have to temporarily remove three of the four legs and unscrew the six screws connecting the lower and upper halves of the case.
It remains to add that the Logitech MX Master 3 turned out to be quite large and heavy. And if even the owners of a small brush can get used to the first one, then the second one may not be to someone’s taste. If the mouse is often lifted off the surface of the table or mat, only its well-thought-out shapes and soft coating save it. Otherwise, with such a mass, the mouse would certainly tend to slip out of the hand. However, someone will like the massiveness of the device, on the contrary.
⇡ #Software features
In principle, working with a mouse is possible without installing additional software. All buttons and gestures are initially assigned certain commands, so the Logitech MX Master 3 is ready for normal work with office applications out of the box. But for sophisticated users, and just to fully unleash the full potential of the new product, the manufacturer suggests using the Logitech Options application. The Russified interface of the application is easy to learn.
All buttons, except for the two main ones, can be assigned any functions, among which there are procedures for switching between applications and windows, editing and editing functions, playback control, system changes, access to certain applications and settings, launching files and applications, and much more. For the two main buttons, you can only swap their functions. Also, any of the buttons can be disabled altogether. Here you can also see detailed information about all the main functions of the mouse, as well as download profiles for working with various applications. Among them are Adobe, Microsoft applications, Internet browsers, communication programs. In addition, to work with each individual installed application, you can create your own profile and save it.
The button that initiates work with gestures is configured separately. By default, it switches between desktops, but you can assign another function available for installation on additional keys.
Also, using Logitech Options, you can change the sensor resolution in 50 dpi increments, scroll direction and wheel sensitivity. Well, here you can also find and connect to work new devices for the simultaneous operation of Logitech Flow technology.
⇡ #Impressions from work
If you are a fan of large input devices, then you will surely enjoy holding the Logitech MX Master 3 in your hands. It seemed to us that this is, without exaggeration, one of the most convenient forms of manipulator that we had to work with before. In the hand, it lies just perfect, regardless of how you are used to holding the mouse: with three fingers on the buttons on top or with two. When moving from place to place above the surface, the mouse does not slip, although its mass, of course, makes itself felt.
Working with wheels is equally comfortable. Although the main vertical scroll wheel is made of steel, it is pleasant to the touch. It was not necessary to get used to its inertia. The more you push the wheel, the further the document will scroll. Everything is very natural and predictable. Line-by-line movements are best done in a discrete mode of operation. And in one, and in another case, the wheel is spinning completely silently.
Almost all of this applies to the side reel designed for horizontal scrolling, with the exception that it does not have two modes of operation. For photo editors, it can be programmed to change the scale, although the same function will be no less convenient to “hang” on gestures. There are more than enough customization options in this case! To quickly work with gestures, I had to adapt a little. At first, it turned out to be not so easy to force yourself to press the corresponding button with your thumb and move the mouse at the same time. However, the habit was formed in about a day of working with the manipulator.
We tried the mouse on a variety of surfaces, including the glass mentioned by the manufacturer. The result is excellent: no false positives, jumps or unplanned cursor movements were noted.
When we got acquainted with the mouse, we did not pass by the Logitech Flow technology. You can connect the Logitech MX Master 3 mouse to your computer using either the Logitech Unifying USB transceiver or any other built-in Bluetooth module. In the first way, we connected the manipulator to a desktop PC, and in the second to a laptop. While Logitech Flow is not turned on, you need to press the button with the indicator on the bottom of the mouse to switch between devices.
As soon as two computers connected to a single local network are found by the Logitech Options application (fully automatically), the mouse cursor can be dragged from one desktop to another without physically pressing a button. Together with the cursor, you can drag and drop folders, files, text and any other data. Everything works perfectly! The only thing that can cause difficulties is accidentally jumping the cursor to the desktop of another PC when moving it to the edge of the window. If you cannot get used to this function, then you can configure the transition with a pressed key [Ctrl]which is also very convenient.
If you work with several computers at the same time, if you use a lot of frequently repeated commands, if you are a programmer, designer, artist or just an office worker, if comfort in work is not an empty phrase for you, then the Logitech MX Master 3 mouse should at least be considered for purchase. … In this case, only the rather high cost of this manipulator can keep from the latter, but it is fully justified by its capabilities and the highest quality of workmanship. In addition, after a good search, you can find this mouse for an amount below the recommended one.
In general, the capabilities of the Logitech MX Master 3, without a doubt, can be estimated at ten points out of ten. There is nothing superfluous, like idle backlighting, like on game manipulators, here, but the available functions are unique and really useful when working.
The advantages of the novelty:
- original attractive design;
- the form worked out to the smallest detail;
- convenient location of all controls without exception;
- two modes of operation of the main scroll wheel;
- drum for horizontal scrolling;
- gesture control;
- mode of simultaneous work with several devices with the ability to exchange data between them;
- precise operation of the sensor on any surfaces;
- flexible settings of proprietary software.
There is only one drawback – it is a fairly large mass that not everyone will like. But with all the other advantages and ease of use, even such a disadvantage is lost and becomes barely noticeable only with very long work with the manipulator. Well, the ideal solution, of course, would be to use a Logitech MX Master 3 mouse coupled with a Logitech MX Keys keyboard. In this case, the full potential put by the manufacturer in the novelty will be revealed.
