Xiaomi lagged behind competitors in the development of a sub-screen camera and will release the first smartphone with it only in 2021

The Chinese company Xiaomi last year demonstrated a prototype of a smartphone, the front camera of which was placed directly under the screen. However, later the developers reported that the technology was not yet ready for mass use. Now the situation has changed, and the vendor has confirmed that the first Xiaomi device with a sub-screen camera will be released in 2021.

According to reports, the developers have created a third-generation sub-screen camera, which will be used in future Xiaomi smartphones. The manufacturer claims that the new sub-screen sensor is invisible due to the special arrangement of pixels, due to which it is possible to achieve the same density in all parts of the screen. This means that the user will not see the front-facing camera module installed under the screen, which will make the design of smartphones more coherent and attractive. At the same time, the developers said that the third-generation sub-screen sensor is able to provide the same image quality as a conventional front camera.

The special pixel arrangement used in the camera technology under the third generation Xiaomi display allows the screen to let light through the sub-pixel gap area, so that each individual pixel retains the full RGB sub-pixel arrangement without compromising density. Compared to other common solutions on the market, Xiaomi has doubled the number of pixels horizontally and vertically, reaching the same pixel density above the camera as elsewhere on the screen. Thus, the area above the built-in camera exhibits the same brightness, color gamut and color accuracy as the rest of the screen.“, – said in a statement Xiaomi.

The Xiaomi sub-screen camera module also uses a special scheme that allows you to “hide more components under the RGB sub-pixels” and increase the light transmittance in the area under the display.
