A working prototype of a 5G base station was demonstrated at the forum

The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) presented the first Russian working prototype of a new generation base station as part of the Strong Ideas for a New Time Forum, which
organized and conducted by the Agency for Strategic Initiatives (ASI) and the Roscongress Foundation in mid-November this year.

As noted by the Skoltech press service, the 5G base station was delivered to the event specially from the MTS Skoltech communication network. This is the first new generation network to use equipment and software made in Russia. The prototype demonstrates the data transfer rate in
operating network of the mobile operator MTS, which reaches 300 – 450 Mbit / s, and also supports the main Russian and international 5G operating bands – 3.5 GHz and 4.9 GHz.

Dmitry Lakontsev, head of the Skoltech-based NTI Competence Center for Wireless and Internet of Things technologies, believes that the attention of the organizers and participants to the development of
confirms the correctness of the course chosen by the institute – the development of modern ICT solutions for the needs of the Russian economy. The expert is sure that in 2023 the institute, together with its partners –
companies “Eltex” and “Radio Gigabit” – will be engaged in scaling the solution at the federal level. Industrial designs of base stations in operators’ networks will demonstrate the speed that
3-4 times faster than the data transfer rate on the MTS Skoltech test network. In addition, if other frequencies are allocated for the 5G standard in Russia, partners will also be able to provide their support.

The first model of the Russian base station of the 5G network was presented by the state corporation “Rostec” in September this year during the fifth conference “Digital Industry of Industrial Russia”. It was created
Russian specialists with the participation of NPK Kryptonite. The preliminary cost of the development and production of such equipment in Russia was estimated at about 40 billion rubles.

According to Dmitry Lakontsev, the release of serial equipment manufactured in Russia and operating on the basis of domestic software can be established by the end of 2022.
